KashFlow Blog

Me, me, me.

A little while ago Dennis Howlett of AccManPro came in to KashFlow Towers and shot a video, part of which was an interview with me.

I honestly didn’t (and still don’t) think I said much that was interesting, but when it was published I got lots of great feedback from people. So I thought I’d share it here too. (No comments on the shirt please!)

Whilst I’m at it, here is another video interview I did with Knowledge Peers. You have to register to view the video, which is a PITA, but it’s worth registering for all the other great videos on their site.

Finally, here’s an audio-only interview with Alex Bellinger of SmallBizPod, with the lovely title “SaaS, Drugs and Rock’n'Roll

I think that’s enough narcissism for one day.

Four things your new SaaS app must have

Recently I’ve had a fair number of people get in touch saying they’re starting SaaS businesses and wanting to pick my brains.
It makes me feel like a bit of a fraud if I’m honest.
The modest success of KashFlow, my SaaS accounting software company, has been mainly down to hard work by other people and some [...]

Four things You Probably Don’t Know About Twitter

Here are four things I found out about Twitter that aren’t immediately obvious, so hopefully they may be of use to you too.
1) Link stats
Because of the 140 character limit, URLs you post on Twitter are usually shortened. The default URL shortener in Tweetdeck is bit.ly. So the short URL for my last post [...]

QuickBooks to enter UK SaaS Accounting Market

I got lucky at the end of 2008 and got the chance to announce Sages entry to the UK SaaS accounting software market before they did. the luck continued with finding some serious security flaws that forced them to withdraw the product a month after launch.
Their new SaaS product which I’m dubbing “Son of SageLive” [...]

Reviewing from the wrong perspective

Through a combination of bad planning on my part and staff holidays, I ended up covering support this weekend.
It was interesting to see an old chestnut come up in the form of this email from an accountant.
Not impressed at all! Having been in practice over 20 years I can only say I won’t be recommending [...]

Marketing Mistakes 101

I’ve blogged before about dodgy leaflets, but here’s another one.
This is a leaflet that was being given out on Tooley Street in London yesterday. Spot the obvious mistakes?

Email is Broken

I’m sure this has been blogged about many times before –  in fact it was Richard Messiks blog post that inspired this one – but email really is broken.
You may have noticed that I’ve not blogged for a little while. This is because I’ve been in Cuba for a family holiday for 2 weeks. Internet [...]

Putting the Billions and Trillions into perspective

There’s been so much media talk over the last couple of years about millions and billions of dollars. They all become just words and it’s hard to visualise how 100 billion looks next to 1 million.
Well, despair no more.
This great “info graphic” puts everything into perspective for you.

Hitler and Cloud Computing Security

An entertaining video that was brought to my attention by 10Yetis. You get the gist after the first couple of minutes, but it’s worth watching the whole thing.

For more cloud humour, see this cynical explanation of the cloud using an analogy of the Cloud Cafe. I’m still not sure what the sweeties man was all [...]

The 10 Rules of Software Support

I’ve commented before that support is the one side of the business I have trouble letting go of and letting others take full responsibility for. It’s just so important that we get it right as it’s essential to encouraging those taking our free trial to become paying customers and to keep existing customers happy (and [...]

Is it the Stig? Is it a listening device?

Frivolous blog posts are traditionally reserved for Fridays. But lets have one on a Monday for a change.
Over the weekend I moved into a new house. in a few of the rooms there was an odd device plugged in to the sockets. I had no idea what it was.
The label on the back yielded no clues. It just referenced a [...]
